Jessica Ngo graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in biology. She is currently pursuing her pharmacy degree at UCSF School of Pharmacy. Jessica is a So-Cal native, and when she's not out eating at that new restaurant, she's either trying out new recipes, working on her fitness, or relaxing at home watching Netflix. As the youngest of four children, she is grateful to have had the guidance of her older siblings growing up. Now, she hopes to share her own knowledge and experience with others.
Why are you passionate about pharmacy?
It's always intrigued me-- how drugs the size of a dime can have such an impact on someone's health or change one’s life for the better. It was not until I delved into the different fields of pharmacy and learned about the increasing role of pharmacists in healthcare that I realized how much more there is to be done. Doctors and patients depend on pharmacists' expertise to ensure effective and optimal drug use. As experts in medication and one of the most accessible healthcare providers, I think pharmacists will expand their role in healthcare in the coming years and I very much look forward to becoming part of that change.
What do you like most about mentorship?
What I value the most is seeing others succeed and knowing that I was able to help make that happen. I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for my own mentors giving me advice and feedback throughout my journey to finding jobs and getting into pharmacy school. I think one of the best parts about mentorship is seeing those who I have helped go forth and help other people, creating an ongoing cycle of mentor-mentee relationships.
What made you want to join the HGA team?
I think what HGA does is something you cannot easily find elsewhere. HGA is comprised of a team who knows exactly what it is like to apply for school and jobs, who has succeeded in getting there, and who genuinely wants to see others share the same success. I have my mentors to thank for my accomplishments, such as getting accepted into pharmacy school, because they were there to answer so many of my questions when I felt lost. For that reason, I want to help others who find themselves in that position, and I think HGA creates a great space to allow me to do so.
I see that you'll be moving to San Francisco in the next few months. What are you most excited about in this new city?
I'm most excited to try all the new food places and see all the landscapes that make the city what it is. I also enjoy the gloomy weather, so I think it will be a good change of pace from the ever-so-sunny Los Angeles and Orange County. Also, I've lived in So-Cal my entire life! This will definitely be the biggest move of my life thus far, and though I'm sad to be leaving a lot behind, I'm excited to see what's in store.
