With the interview season being right around the corner, applicants should begin preparing for the next big step: the interview. This process should not be taken lightly, as it is the final frontier that you must successfully complete in order for the admissions team to accept you. Here are some key tips to preparing for a successful dental school interview:
Open a Word document and write bullet points for these most asked questions:
Why are you interested in our school? Why would our dental school be a good fit for you?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What experiences have you had in dentistry?
Give me an example of when you had to face a challenge. How did you overcome that challenge?
Practice with yourself! Stand in front of a mirror and start talking to yourself! It may seem weird at first, but it can really help you find a rhythm and the right words that will benefit you on interview day. During your interview, just be yourself and showcase your personality. Demonstrate that you are extremely passionate about dentistry and confident that dentistry is the career path for you.
Practice with friends! If you have classmates who are also preparing for medical/pharmacy/optometry/dental interviews, you all can help each other out by testing each other. Regardless of whether you choose to practice in person or through Skype, remember to treat it like a real interview. I practiced with a medical student who wore his white coat during our mock interview and it was definitely intimidating, but it helped prepare me for the big day.
Do research on the school. You do not want to walk into an interview and not know anything about the school you are currently visiting. Go on their webpage and read through their organizations, mission statement, community service, etc.
Think of questions to ask the interviewer. Prepare a few questions to ask the interviewer beforehand. They will always end the interview asking, “Do you have any questions for me?” Ask one or two questions to show the interviewer that you are engaged and intrigued with their school.
The night before your interview, make sure to…
Iron your suit/outfit and lay it out so it is ready to go in the morning.
Put your phone on silent.
Bring your wallet and any other supplemental items they request (ex. Passport photo).
Look up where you are supposed to meet.
Set your alarm.
On the morning of your interview, be confident, breathe and smile! ☺ Mentally tell yourself, "You can do this!" because you are a strong and unique individual and you have already come so far to achieve your goals!
